How to Correct an Error on a Specialty Consumer Report

Finding an error on a specialty report is different from simply freezing the file. The correction process starts with identifying the exact information, the company reporting it, and the documentation that supports your position.

A security freeze does not remove inaccurate information. If a specialty consumer report contains an account, inquiry, address, public record or other item that is wrong or the result of identity theft, the issue must be addressed separately.

1. Get the complete report

Work from the actual consumer disclosure, not a screenshot or second-hand summary. Identify the exact item, date, account or identifier you believe is wrong.

2. Separate “unfavorable” from “inaccurate”

Accurate information generally cannot be removed simply because it is negative. A strong dispute identifies a factual inaccuracy, incompleteness, identity-theft issue or mismatch and explains what the correct information should be.

3. Identify the furnisher

The consumer reporting company may have received the information from a lender, bank, telecom provider, public-record vendor or another data supplier. In many situations, disputing with both the reporting company and the furnisher creates a clearer record of the problem.

4. Provide focused documentation

Include only documents that actually support the issue — for example, an identity-theft report, account-closure letter, corrected statement, government identification, legal name-change order or correspondence from the furnisher.

5. Keep every response

Save the dispute letter, delivery confirmation, agency response, revised report and any correspondence from the furnisher. If you use FreezeReports.com, send responses back as clean PDF scans through the secure portal.
